Tournaig Fish Trap Project, Wester Ross

The Tournaig trap in Wester Ross has been operating to monitor wild salmon and sea trout entering and leaving the little Tournaig River system by Loch Ewe since 1999.

The river has supported a small wild salmon population in addition to brown trout and a few sea trout. Each year, salmon smolts and sea trout smolts have been recorded as they migrate to sea. Much data has been collected over more than 20 years creating a valuable long term data set.

This funding request was in part for necessary repairs to replace the old steel grid on the downstream trap designed for catching smolts, using stainless-steel grids reclaimed from the Marine Directorate’s former fish trap on the River Shieldaig system, and for some repairs to the old fish pass in which the fish traps are located. The Wester Ross Fisheries Trust also requested funding for staff time for operating the traps, for their annual juvenile fish survey and for data analysis and report writing.

Summary Tournaig trap reports are available here.
