River Doon habitat improvement project

Utilising green engineering techniques in concert with riparian tree planting the Doon DSFB and Ayrshire Rivers Trust will protect key spawning grounds on the River Doon.

The objective of the project is to reduce the erosion of alluvial soils from riverbanks by enhancing bank stability at critical locations and providing shade as a result of planned tree planting (as they mature). The bank erosion is acute in particular areas where high banks and rich alluvial soils are mobilised in large volumes by the river.

The project will:

  • Protect salmon and trout spawning grounds from excess silt inputs by addressing known areas of riverbank erosion using green engineering techniques – approximately 80meters length
  • Install approximately 100m of livestock fencing to establish protected riverbanks
  • Plant 1000 native trees and further willow cuttings to help hold the riverbanks together, provide shade and shelter. This section of the river is lacking of trees however the Angling Club have taken steps to start planting more trees in recent years which the DSFB and ART have supported financially and with materials.
  • Upskill local people in how to best manage and solve erosion issues and protect valuable habitats.
  • Raise awareness of the threat of rising water temperatures to fish populations and how best to address this.
