The project will restore a previously straightened section of the Barhoise Burn by reintroducing natural meanders, while 1,000 locally sourced broadleaf trees will be planted along the Malzie Burn to provide shade and improve the riparian habitat. Both measures are designed to enhance river health, increase habitat diversity and improve conditions for fish across the catchment.
The project is supported by Kirkcowan Angling Club, the local community angling association for the river, which has already secured £5,000 in match funding. Galloway Fisheries Trust has a strong track record of delivering successful conservation work, including a previous Wild Fisheries Fund project using scallop shells to improve river habitats.
A good-value project with clear, measurable outcomes, the work will deliver tangible habitat improvements while supporting the long-term resilience of the River Bladnoch's wild salmon populations.
